Super seeds - flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds - are the rave now and for good reasons. Around West Africa, Egusi seeds are a close equivalent, and have had their day since time immemorial.

Rich in protein, fibre and essential Omega 6 & 9 unsaturated fats, Egusi seeds are as super food as they come. The seeds are white, flat, and spherically shaped with pointed tips and come in thin yellow shells, very much like pumpkin seeds. Harvested from a variety of bitter melon, grown in countries like Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana and Mali, Egusi seeds are so versatile and can be served in a variety of ways:

  • whole, as a snack: typically the seeds are toasted with salt & spices to taste
  • roast and ground to powder for use as soups, steamed puddings,  meat patties

We present a number of delicious Egusi recipes from Egusi quiches/pies to Egusi fried rice, and a variety of Egusi soups, we can't wait for you to try.
